Re: Best CD Veggie joint
Mon, January 10, 2005 - 9:49 PMThe Globe Cafe, of course.
14th & Pine.
Also Saigon Deli in the strip mall on the NE corner of 12th & Jackson has $1.25 Tofu sandwitches. YUM. They have scary meat there, though. -

Re: Best CD Veggie joint
Tue, January 11, 2005 - 8:33 AMI think the Globe is awful... dry, nasty, bland... you could file through prison bars with the bread they serve...
the service is slow... this is what happens when hippies try to do Moosewood....
and, well, most of all IT ISN'T IN THE CENTRAL DISTRICT.....
I know it's very close, but technically, it's on Capitol Hill...
but if we are allowing ourselves to stray a bit a field, then I vote the Teapot... Chinese, Vegan, nice atmosphere, delivery and food that is quite good....
on 15th, across from GHC
also Cafe Flora, just outside the CD on the other side, on 28th and Madison, or is it 29th?
Excellent food and very nice relaxed atmosphere complete with indoor fountain -

Re: Best CD Veggie joint
Tue, January 11, 2005 - 8:34 AMSaigon Deli, even FURTHER out of the Central District then the Globe, by the way... in the International District
don't mean to be such a stickler, but this tribe IS the Central District Tribe, right?
Maybe we must go a bit out of the 'hood... the ghetto don't really do veggie (thank god!)

Re: Best CD Veggie joint
Mon, January 31, 2005 - 9:10 PMCorrect, vegetarian fare in the heart of the CD is meager at best, which is why one needs to wander into the transition zone for good veggie.
I will defend the Globe for their cinnamon rolls, biscuts and gravy, and corn grits; they are mainly a breafast joint anyway, with a few lunch items that I haven't tried. Agreed that their bread is not the greatest. And the service can be slow when they are busy, but that provides more time to tank up on their good coffee :-)
Teapot gets my vote too.. -

Re: Best CD Veggie joint
Tue, February 1, 2005 - 10:05 AMlol yep, you do have to go out of the CD to really get veggie, so I'll give ya that one...
and teapot rules, as does Cafe Flora...
but sorry, the Globe sux... ALL their baked goods are dry, and I know its mostly a brkfst place, thats the only time I've ever been there...
and biscuits and gravy, really has to be biscuits and gravy (w/sausage) not biscuits and "gravy" some things you just can't, and shouldn't, fake
then, i'm not a vegetarian, i'm a proud carnivore who can appreciate good vegetarian food from time to time....
coffee, eh? it's not awful, but it's not great either
and decent coffee doesn't make up for bad service, sawdust like baked goods, dry pancakes, badly spiced scrambled tofu, greasy unwashed dreadlocks, and patchouli stink...
sorry, but that's my call on the globe... cafe flora serves breakfast too... over the top excellent breakfasts, with great service, neat and clean cooks and servers, and truly good coffee... they even bring you the coffee and refills! you don't have to get up and get it yourself from the side board!
yeah, it's pricier, but I'm willing to pay for good service and truly good food --in this case miles and miles and miles above the quality at the globe, damn near 4 star quality...
I'd say an avg brkfst at flora is probably about $10-$12, incl getting your coffee.... sure it's more than the globe, but its worth it, esp considering that i only eat brkfst out about once a month...
i'll gladly save up my pennies and go out less often but get truly good food...
sorry! but the globe is just godawful!! LOL
to each his own I suppose.... I just hate hippies so much, ya know? -

Re: Best CD Veggie joint
Tue, February 15, 2005 - 2:07 PMWell, hmm...a good veggie joint...I'll have to check out that one up on 20th...sounds enticing.
I will have to go with the Ethiopian/Somalian restaraunts around here.
However, the Dur Dur only has one veggie dish in reality, which is the Foul....but I find it quite satisfying (Fava Beans w/spices, onions)....mmm, and the somalian Angera is quite yummy....
There is 1 other dish they have, which is a breakfast...
Somalian Pancakes..omg so good...
Angera, butter, sugar w/chai..
Oh, might i add, the Dur Dur has the BEST CHAI IN TOWN
I reccommend it...1$ a cup!!! how can you beat that..and the chai is home-made w/use of non-dairy creamer
they are located on 23rd & Cherry.
OK, now onto my Ethiopian picks ::::
Addis Cafe, so yummy..and the spice is always a suprise...authentic cuisine with baskets to eat out of. Better than Mesob in my opinion ::: Located @ 12th & Jefferson
The other one is one that we visited just recently..its on Cherry above Meskel & the building is white..i have no idea the name..just walked in cuz it seems like it may be a good idea...and how it was yesyes...
The windows are silver so you can't see in. but the food is absolutely wonderful. Most vegetable they recieve are also ORGANIC as read thru the menu..
Again, they are on Cherry, Before MLK/catfish bar and after the Meskel (new ethiopian restaraunt...skip it if you know whats good for you).
Ok, hope that helps :)
-grei~
ps: Globe is a bit ont he dry side...
however, you might want to try one of there Gyro's....best veg. euro in town, i Guarantee!

Re: Best CD Veggie joint
Tue, February 15, 2005 - 2:14 PMlol i'll check out your picks... haven't been to any of them... though ethiopian isn't a fave style of mine
i need to give it a go, cuz i've only had it once, quite a few years ago, and i was so unimpressed --cold spongy bread creeped me out!--that i've never been inspired to try it since...
but i think it's time to re-visit it...
if by that place on 20th is refering to my reccomendation of Cafe Flora, which I think it is? it's on 28th (or 27th or 29th, but around there)... if you go for dinner, try the Mushrooms Wellington
Rovers, which is very close by Flora.. its French also has a superior vegetarian course (you have to buy a whole course, there are 2 or 3 each night, one is always vegetarian, NOT vegan though)... if you have about $75 per person to blow, PLUS what you spend on drinks and tip, go for it! it's a special occassion, ask you to marry me, sort of place, but it's worth it!
I've been to the globe dozens of times, though not recently, i'll admit, and there really isn't anything that could make me give it another chance... short of maybe going their because my one true love insisted upon it, or being paid a hefty sum, in addition to a free meal, to eat there...
the ONLY thing I like about the place is that they named it The Globe, in honor of it having once been a glove shop
it's rare, but every so often, hippies do get it right... -

Re: Best CD Veggie joint
Tue, February 15, 2005 - 2:15 PMthat is, it was once a GLOBE shop LOL damn typos! -
